Press Release for April 13, 2010

San_Japan_2010_thumbSan Japan, San Antonio's major Japanese Culture and Anime Convention, has announced the third round of guests for its upcoming convention happening on July 9th-11th, 2010. San Japan, along with the cooperation of Cherry Blossom Productions, is proud to announce that Japanese Rock Band KESHIKI will making their Texas musical debut performance. Additional guests announced include an appearance by Something Positive webcomic artist R. K. Milholland, along with the return of voice actor Clarine Harp and cosplay group DigitalDimensionCosplay.

KESHIKI, which means 'landscape' in English, was formed in the spring of 2007. Their music contains the melodic and dynamic vocals of Jun, ex-vocalist of Camino, mixed with the sensual and powerful rock sounds created by guitarist Yu, bassist Kenta, and drummer Taka. Despite the band only being together for a few years, their musical background is quite extensive.

Texas-born R. K. Milholland is the creator of the webcomics Midnight Macabre, Classically Positive, Something Positive, New Gold Dreams and Super Stupor. His comics have so many fans, they managed to raise enough money to allow him to quit his day gig and become a full-time cartoonist. His work often covers topics related to gaming, geeks, goths and comics, which explains why his fans are so maniacally devoted.San_Japan_2010San Japan

Clarine Harp was first cast by FUNimation Entertainment in 2003 to give life to the character of Tweedledee in Kiddy Grade. Since then, Clarine's talents have been featured in a broad range of roles. Working behind the scenes, on behalf of both gaming and cosplay, DigitalDimensionCosplay has helped fuel, run, and promote projects such as A-kon's 2008 Guinness Record for "Most Video Game Cosplayers Gathered in One Area" and A-kon's "Video Game Cosplay Contest," plus helped bring Cosplay awareness to the dimly lit back rooms of gaming events.

San Japan will be happening on the weekend of July 9th – 11th, 2010 in the middle of the famous Riverwalk at the new convention location to happen at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel, adjacent to the Rivercenter Mall. Pre-registration for the upcoming convention is at a discount rate of $35 for a discount 3-day weekend pass (At-Door registration will be $45). Pre-registration is open until June 10th and the discount hotel rates are available until June 17th, . stan_lee_phoenix_CC_2010Stan Lee, the co-creator of many of America’s favorite comic book heroes, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, and the Hulk, will be attending this year’s Phoenix Comicon, May 27-30th.

“This is why we are the signature pop-culture event of the southwest,” said Matt Solberg, Phoenix Comicon Convention Director, “Our attendees get to meet the best of the best.”

Lee’s amazing career began with Marvel Comics before the publishing company was even called “Marvel.” From a very young age, Lee showed a knack for the comics industry, becoming an editor at 18-years-old in 1941. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s, however that Lee’s true genius showed through. At that time DC Comics, Marvel’s main competition, was seeing significant success with superheroes. Marvel needed a similar success. Lee was assigned the task. He took a chance and invented heroes that had human problems, from vanity to a bad temper. His first such group of heroes, the Fantastic Four, were amazingly popular and led on to the creation of the Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men, and eventually Marvel’s most successful super hero, Spider-Man.

“Stan is something of a superhero himself,” said Anabel Martinez, Phoenix Comicon Marketing Director, “Where he goes, success follows. Understandably, we’re happy to have him!”

Since then, Lee has become at various times the face of Marvel and its leader. He has appeared in cameo parts in the motion pictures based on his characters, and in celebration of 65 years with the Company, Marvel immortalized Lee in a series of one-shot comics in 2006 where he met many of the superheroes he helped create.stan_lee_phoenix_CC_2010_smallStan Lee

“Pardon me while I just freak out a little,” said Ed Harris, Comics Programming Director for the Phoenix Comicon, “I’m just so excited to meet Stan!”

Phoenix Comicon is the signature pop culture event of the southwest, presenting guests and programming for hobbyists and fans by attracting the top segments of the comics, anime, sci-fi, film, TV, and gaming industries. ?Entering its ninth year, Phoenix Comicon is expected to draw over 10,000+ attendees to its May 27-30, 2010 convention held at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency located in downtown Phoenix.

Tora_con_2010_logo_thumbRIT Anime Club is excited to announce the final guests for Tora-Con 2010: musical guest Gavin Goszka, webcomic guests Ananth Panagariya and Yuko Ota, as well as voice actor Billy West!

William Richard "Billy" West is a voice actor. He launched his career in the early 1980s performing daily comedic routines on Boston's WBCN (TOP Rock station of the time) shortly after moving on to do the revival of Beany and Cecil and was also a cast member on the Howard Stern's radio show during the early to mid 1990s. West is best known for his voice-work on Ren & Stimpy, Doug and Futurama. His favorite characters are Philip J. Fry (Futurama) and Stimpy (Ren and Stimpy), both of which he originated. West's most notable film work was in Space Jam (1996) providing the voice of both Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd; he has provided the same voices for other Looney Tunes films and video games. West has been very outspoken over his displeasure about the influx of movie star actors providing voice-over for films and major shows.

As well as a voice artist, West is also a guitarist and singer-songwriter with a band called Billy West and The Grief Counselors.

Actor's appearance subject to studio responsibilities.

Yuko Ota and Ananth Panagariya are the creators of Johnny Wander (http://www.johnnywander.com), a twice-weekly webcomic. It alternates between charm-of-life autobiography about the authors' lives in Brooklyn, and whimsical, surreal fiction. Recent shorts include The Girl with the Skeleton Hand and Delilah and the Basilisk. Johnny Wander has been running since 2008.

Gavin Goszka started playing music at age seven and was writing and recording his own songs by seventeen. His background includes formal training in both piano and voice, self-instruction on guitar and bass, and a 10-year history of performing as a solo acoustic artist. He discovered anime music through internet radio and quickly became an avid fan, learning many of his favorite songs by ear and gradually picking up the Japanese language along the way. The idea of performing the music live came largely from a desire to share this interest with other fans, and also to audiences that may not have the opportunity to experience it otherwise. Gavin is also a member of the gothic horror soundtrack outfit Midnight Syndicate, and has recorded modernized versions of popular songs from the Victorian era under the name Parlormuse. His latest project is an all-original English-language CD featuring vocaloid Megurine Luka.

These guests will cap off Tora-Con 2010's guest roster, joining Johnny Yong Bosch and Eyeshine, Eric Vale, Monica Rial, Chris Sabat, Armcannon and Geek Comedy Tour! Along with these great guests, Tora-con will also host a collection of contests and panels, such as an AMV contest, Cosplay contest, Game shows, and fan panels such as the "One Piece Unofficial Podcast." Also, Pre-registration ends March 25th. All pre-registration forms must be post-marked before this date to be considered. Everything dealing with pre-registration can be found at our website!
